After a fruitless attempt to track down Del’s friends Marco and Alessandro, I texted Sidney and arranged to meet him for a late lunch at one of the few places open at two in the afternoon—Arturo’s Gelateria. Arturo and Paolo Moretti sat at the same table they’d occupied yesterday, drinking espressos and playing chess. They ignored me, and I was content to be ignored, choosing a table as far away from theirs as possible.

While I waited for Sidney to arrive, I ordered food and water for Bernice and used my internet research skills to dig for info on Dani, Jocelyn, and Lucky. Dani was easy to find under her married name. Three years ago, a glossy celebrity magazine had featured her wedding to Luigi, complete with a loved-up interview with the happy couple. Dani glowed in her wedding photographs, sleekly confident in a diamond-studded designer dress.

According to the magazine feature, Dani’s father was Franco Locatelli, a wealthy industrialist from Milan. I didn’t find any connection between Franco and the Mafia, but I placed little reliance on a cursory internet search. Dani and her sister had attended exclusive boarding schools and had jettisoned third-level education to become social media influencers.

Dani had last updated her social media profiles several months before she’d absconded with my brother. Scrolling through her flawlessly filtered photos was like flipping through the pages of a travel brochure. Luigi and Dani—or Anna-Sofia as she’d been known then—had lived the high life in exotic locations around the world. However badly Luigi had treated Dani behind the scenes, I found it hard to imagine that a woman used to such luxury could find long-term happiness with my brother. Even in the unlikely event that Dani persuaded Del to go straight, he’d never bring home the sort of money her father and Luigi had in abundance.

Lucky was equally easy to internet stalk. His author website was a self-congratulatory lovefest featuring photos of Lucky posing outside various government agency buildings, shaking hands with politicians, and breaking bread with known Italian-American mobsters. An internet search brought up pages of links to interviews Lucky had done in print, audio, and for TV. He was famous for writing fast-paced crime novels loosely based on real-life crimes. The twists and turns and colorful characters made them perfect fodder for small- and large-screen adaptations. Despite the plethora of information about Lucky, the writer, details about his private life were surprisingly scant. The internet recorded his age as sixty-two and indicated he had a couple of ex-wives who refused to be interviewed. I found no mention of children.

Of my three research suspects, Jocelyn was the hardest to find. After consulting several forums devoted to conspiracy theories, I found a blog allegedly run by Jocelyn, albeit under a pseudonym. I couldn’t find his author website, but then, he probably used a different pseudonym for his books. I’d have to ask Sidney for more details about his cousin.

By the time Sidney walked into the ice cream parlor, Bernice was enjoying an afternoon snooze, and I was on my second double espresso.
